Privacy Policy

The Rennie Source is a worker-maintained record of renaissance faire working conditions. This page explains what personal information we collect, why we collect it, who sees it, and how you can ask us about it.

Who We Are

The Rennie Source operates this website. Questions about this policy, or about your information, go through our Contact page.

Information We Collect

What we collect depends on how you use the site.

  • Accounts. Display name, email address, a hashed password, and an optional profile photo. Optional profile details such as whether you work faires, the kind of work you do, faires you have worked, and affiliations. If you turn on two-factor authentication, we store a secret and backup codes. If you fill a vendor profile, we store the business details you enter.
  • Contact messages. Name, email address, and message. We keep a copy and email staff so we can reply.
  • Contributions and corrections. Suggested facts, sources, and your explanation of how you know. Moderators review these before anything is published.
  • Reviews. A score and written comments. Published reviews do not show your name.
  • Job posts. Listing details, location, dates, photos you upload, and the application contact you provide. Published posts can include that contact method.
  • Saved faires and subscriptions. Which faires you save or follow, so we can show them in your account and email updates you asked for.
  • Worker verification. Status, method, moderator notes, and any evidence you send. That evidence stays private. Public pages do not show legal names or home addresses from verification.
  • Technical data. IP address, browser user agent, and similar request data. We use this to run sessions, limit abuse, and keep the site working. Signed-in sessions store IP address and user agent with the session.

We do not run advertising. We do not use a product-analytics service. We do not ask for payment card numbers.

How We Use It

  • Create and keep your account, including email confirmation, sign-in links, and password resets.
  • Show you the directory, jobs, calendar, and account tools you are allowed to use.
  • Moderate contributions, reviews, and job posts.
  • Reply to contact messages.
  • Send email you requested, such as faire subscription notices.
  • Protect the site from bots, spam, and abuse.
  • Keep records needed to operate and improve the project.

What We Publish

Directory facts, camping notes, contacts, and similar records appear on public faire pages after a moderator publishes them. Organizational contact emails and websites can appear there when they belong on the record.

There is no public worker roster. Profile details such as the faires you have worked stay in your account and with staff. Reviews appear without your name. Job posts can name an employer and the contact method you chose.

Do not put a home address, personal phone number, or other private contact on a public listing unless you intend that information to be public.

Cookies And Similar Technology

We use cookies that are needed to sign you in and keep the site secure. That includes session cookies from our sign-in system, and a short-lived cookie when a magic-link sign-in still needs a two-factor code. Sessions usually last about seven days.

Cloudflare Turnstile runs on some forms to tell people from bots. It can process signals such as IP address, TLS fingerprint, user agent, and the site key for this origin. Cloudflare describes that processing in its Turnstile Privacy Addendum. We do not use Turnstile to advertise.

We do not set advertising cookies. We do not set analytics cookies.

Who We Share With

We do not sell personal information. We do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising.

We use other companies to run the site:

  • Cloudflare. Hosts the application, database, file storage, background jobs, bot checks, and operational logs. See Cloudflare's Privacy Policy.
  • SendGrid (Twilio). Sends most of our email. Twilio processes recipient addresses and delivery events so the message can be sent. See Twilio's Privacy Notice. If SendGrid is not configured, email goes through the SMTP service we have set.
  • Google Fonts. The site loads typefaces from Google. Google can receive your IP address and browser details when those files are requested. See Google's Privacy Policy.

Moderators and administrators can see account details, submissions, and private evidence as needed to run the site. We may disclose information if the law requires it, or to protect people from serious harm.

Cloudflare, Twilio, and Google may process information in the United States and in other countries.

How Long We Keep It

  • Account and profile data while the account exists.
  • Contact messages while we need them to reply and operate the site.
  • Sign-in sessions until they expire, usually about seven days.
  • Published directory content until it is updated or removed.
  • Job posts until they expire, are taken down, or a moderator removes them.
  • Moderation and audit records as needed to run the project.

There is not a self-serve account deletion button yet. Use Contact if you want us to delete or correct your information.

Your Choices And Rights

You can update much of your profile from your account. You can unsubscribe from faire notices on your subscriptions page. You can take down a job you posted.

You can ask us to access, correct, or delete personal information we hold about you. Send that request through Contact. We may need to confirm it is you. Some records have to stay if the law requires it, or if they are already part of a published public record that cannot be unwound without harming the directory.

If California privacy law applies to you, we still do not sell or share your personal information as those terms are used there. You can use the same contact path to ask what we have collected and to request deletion. We will not treat you worse for making that request.

If European or UK data-protection law applies to you, you may also have rights to restrict or object to some processing, and to receive a copy of information you provided. You can complain to your local data-protection authority.

Children

This site is for adults who work renaissance faires. It is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child under 13 created an account, tell us through Contact.

Changes

If this policy changes, we will post the update here and change the effective date. Keep using the site after an update only if you accept the revised policy.
